Top Beverage Stocks For 2015

In the grand scheme of things, a drop of 32 points for the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) isn't really a big deal, especially when it comes on the heels of a sharp move higher that had resulted in several consecutive record highs for the average. But when the drop comes despite strong economic data, it raises concerns about just how much further the bull market can run without a significant correction. Nervousness about testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke tomorrow also probably created some selling pressure, especially given the dramatic declines that the Fed inspired last month in discussing the potential for tapering its quantitative easing program.

Two consumer stocks led the declines, with Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) falling 1.9% and Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) posting a 1.4% decline. For Coke, earnings were to blame for the decline, as the company continued to see weak sales volumes in North America and missed analysts' expectations for overall revenue. The challenge the soft-drink giant faces is dealing with changing trends in beverages, as its namesake soda brands haven't fared as well as non-sparkling waters, juices, and other drinks lately. Add to that increased pressure to produce healthier offerings, and Coke has some work to do to adapt to changing conditions.

Pepsi has been a steady winner for decades. This trend is likely to continue. Even if the stock gets slammed, it should present an opportunity to buy more at discounted prices. The generous yield would also help ease the pain a little.

Recently, concerns of investors have continued to mount over the future of Coca-Cola (KO) and other soda makers like PepsiCo (PEP) in the wake of increased obesity epidemic in the U.S., Mexico and many other developed countries across the globe that usually contribute a huge part of Coca-Cola's yearly revenue. Really, it isn't without some good reasons that Coca-Cola has been the favorite of many discerning investors over many decades, like Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) with a 400 million share stake in Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola has established itself as a strong financial performer in all major indices. The stock has consistently earned huge revenues and maintained solid earnings per share for several decades. Some other benefits that have caused many individual and institutional investors to love Coca-Cola's stock include consistent growth in dividend increases, good free cash flow and its solid share buyback policy.

One source of strength for Yum! has been Taco Bell, which has done a good job of standing up to rivals in the Mexican food space. Some even see the unit as positioning itself to compete directly against Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG  ) , although Chipotle's price points and targeted customer focus are quite a bit different from Taco Bell's. By reconnecting with former parent PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) through its Doritos Locos Tacos offerings, Yum! has tapped into the popular Doritos brand, helping both companies.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Indeed, consumer-oriented stocks are among the weakest performers in the Dow today. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) is down 2%, likely in response to a reduced forecast from independent bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE  ) . The bottling company said continued trouble in the European economy combined with cold, rainy weather throughout much of the region led to volume declines of 2.5% for the quarter, confirming Coca-Cola's own 4% decline in soda sales in North America that it reported last week. Coke investors need to remember that Coke, with its global operations, is not influenced by U.S.-centric consumer figures so much as domestically focused companies.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: CCE) was raised to the prized Conviction Buy List from Neutral with a $47 price target at Goldman Sachs, sending shares up almost 3% to $38.50 on the upgrade.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Fomento Economico Mexicano (FMX), better known as FEMSA, isn't another ascending triangle trade this week, unfortunately for shareholders. Instead, FEMSA is currently forming the bearish opposite of the pattern in Wells Fargo and Citi: a descending triangle.

The descending triangle is formed by downtrending resistance above shares and a horizontal support level to the downside. In this case, that price floor comes in just below $90. The lower highs that form resistance in FMX signal that buying pressure is waning above the $100 level as long-suffering sellers opt to take gains near the high-end of this stock's recent range. Once that glut of demand at $90 gets taken out, a lot more downside looks likely for FMX.

But now, MTB is forming a rounding bottom, a bullish setup that indicates a gradual shift in control of shares from sellers to buyers. The rounding bottom pattern looks exactly like it sounds, and even though MTB's pattern is actually at the top of its recent range, the trading implications are exactly the same. A breakout above $118 is the signal that the pattern is completed and it's time to be a buyer.

With high short interest in MTB right now, a short squeeze could add some fuel to the fire on a breakout. Support looks reasonably strong at $110 -- that's the spot to keep your stop.

Finally, energy-drink maker Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) tacked on 4.1% after being named to investment firm UBS' (NYSE: UBS  ) top picks list for the second-quarter. According to Wall St. 24/7, UBS has selected 14 top picks which are expected to return 25% from their current levels, of which Monster is one. There's little denying that Monster has exceeded the growth rate of nearly all of its peers, thanks to the strength in its energy-drink sales. However, an FDA probe into the safety of its drinks, and the potential for increased governmental regulation, is enough of a gray cloud to keep me firmly away from Monster Beverage.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Finally, energy-drink maker Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) charged 4.7% higher after its board of directors approved a $200 million share repurchase program. The previous share repurchase program of $250 million had been used in its entirety. This move should somewhat help bolster shares that have suffered due to an FDA probe into the safety of its energy drinks and the threat of increased government regulation looming over the entire sector. As for me, I still see multiple reasons to avoid Monster altogether.

    Monster Beverage (MNST)

Monster Beverage detracted from performance as revenue growth decelerated in the face of negative press related to the safety profile of energy drinks. Despite this transient headwind, the brand continues to take share, profitably, from traditional carbonated soft drinks. We continue to expect the Company's growth profile, over a multi-year period, will eclipse double-digits, despite periodic negative press. Energy drinks continue to be a highly disruptive offering in the beverage industry, driven by a generational shift in preference for caffeinated products. While the level of caffeine in the typical Monster Energy drink is higher than most traditional carbonated soft drinks, it has half as much (per ounce) than most popular coffee house offerings. We believe this relatively new value proposition should position Monster to continue taking share from traditional beverage incumbents.

"Alternative beverage" and energy drinks company Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) logged some of the steepest losses in the index today, losing 3.6%. There wasn't much material news today for investors to be fearful of, but the same can't be said for the last several months. One perpetual setback for the company is the legal risk it assumes for selling and marketing its controversial energy drinks. In May, for example, the city of San Francisco sued Monster for marketing its caffeine-heavy drinks to kids without concern for potential health risks.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roland Head]

Luckily, there is another way. The FTSE 100 contains a number of companies whose earnings come from these countries. Two great examples are Diageo (LSE: DGE  ) (NYSE: DEO  ) and SABMiller (LSE: SAB  ) (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY  ) , which sell spirits and beer, respectively, and have global operations providing exactly the kind of emerging-market exposure I'm looking for.

  • [By Charles Sizemore]

At current valuations, STZ stock is not attractive relative to its larger and better diversified megabrewer rivals — all of which have better exposure to emerging markets. As long-term holdings, I see better value in Heinken, Anheuser-Busch InBev and SAB Miller (SBMRY).

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Recently, Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) introduced in the U.S. its Stella Artois Cidre brand of cider as a means of siphoning off wine drinkers but also trying to steal some of Boston Beer's thunder. According to GuestMetrics, hard cider sales soared 70% in the first quarter, and it was largely on the back of Angry Orchard. Notably, MillerCoors, the joint venture between SABMiller (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , also acquired cider maker Crispin last year.

Small cap stocks Attitude Drinks Inc (OTCMKTS: ATTD), Axiologix, Inc (OTCMKTS: AXLX) and Unisource Corporation (OTCMKTS: USRC) have all been getting some attention lately in investment emails or investor alerts thanks in part to paid promotions. And while there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed paid promotions or investor relations activity, such activity can backfire on unwary investors or traders. With that in mind, here is a closer look at all three small cap stocks to help you decide whether they are truly hot or not:

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    The impact of beer taxes
State excise taxes on beer don't necessarily have a huge impact on state budgets overall, but in tough times, they still represent an important source of tax revenue, and beer producers from giants Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) down to smaller craft beer producers like Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) end up bearing their share of the burden along with their customers.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

The bar is open and the dividends are continuing to flow at Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) . The brewer has declared the latest common stock payout for both its Class A and B shareholders. This is $0.32 per share, to be handed out on September 16 to shareholders of record as of August 30. That amount is in line with each of the company's preceding quarterly distributions stretching back to September 2011.

  • [By Alyce Lomax]

Michael Glade of Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) also participated in the panel discussion. Glade described Coors' ways of dealing with the problems at hand in water use. These have not been money-draining strategies. Glade said that the company's work in water, waste, and energy have resulted in $10 million in savings to the company's bottom line from 2008 through 2012, and it's expecting another $16 million through 2020.
