Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

3dsystems.com With 2014 coming to a close, the market's setting itself up to post modest gains for the year. Naturally, a rising tide doesn't lift all ships. There are a few industries that have fallen out of favor this year despite the gains elsewhere. Let's take a look at three markets that have been battered in 2014. There's a lot riding on them bouncing back in the year ahead. 3-D Printing One of the hottest new industries of 2012 and 2013 was 3-D printing. 3D Systems (DDD) and Stratasys (SSYS) were two of Wall Street's biggest winners as investors got pumped about the prospects of printers that produce physical 3-D objects in a wide range of forms, colors, and textures. Reality hasn't been as kind as the romanticized vision of 3-D printing. There have been pricing and performance stumbling blocks. The machines are still too expensive and too slow. 3D Systems may have seen its stock more than triple in 2012 and more than double in 2013, but it's one of this year's most prolific laggards. Shares of 3D Systems have shed nearly two-thirds of their value. Adjusted earnings tumbled in its latest quarter, and 3D Systems warned of delays in new consumer products and a slowdown in metal printer sales. Stratasys initially held up well, but it has gone on to buckle along with 3D Systems and the other publicly traded 3-D printing specialists. It, too, had to hose down its guidance in its most recent financial report, and Stratasys stock has plunged 40 percent in 2014. Mobile Gaming We're in a mobile computing revolution, but the makers of mobile games aren't exactly feeling the love. We saw Zynga (ZNGA) implode in 2012 as gross bookings slipped at the company behind "Words With Friends" and "FarmVille"; after moving higher in 2013, it resumed its slide in 2014. Shares of Zynga have fallen 28 percent this year, and it's not alone. King Digital Entertainment (KING) went public earlier this year, hoping that it could parlay the success of its "Candy Crush Saga"

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) was started with a Hold rating by Benchmark.

We have two fresh special reports out: one is ten companies set to double their revenues in the next three to four years (or less)and the second is five great stocks trading under book value.

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

www.candycrushsaga.com King Digital Entertainment (KING) has tried to set itself apart from casual gaming rival Zynga (ZNGA) in its brief life as a publicly traded company. Unfortunately, it's failing to. The company behind "Candy Crush Saga" posted disappointing quarterly results on Tuesday afternoon, sending the stock reeling on soft guidance and continuing fears that its flagship game has peaked in popularity. Gross bookings clocked in at $611.1 million. That may be 27 percent ahead of the prior year's take, but that's well short of the $641.1 million it scored during the first three months of this year. In fact, that's also lower than the $648 million in gross bookings that it generated when it peaked during the third quarter of last year and the $632 million it nabbed during the fourth quarter of last year. This was always the fear when it came to investing in King Digital. Gamers are fickle, especially when it comes to free or nearly free apps. Zynga investors got burned when they bought into the "FarmVille" and "Words With Friends" publisher's initial public offering in 2011 because gross bookings peaked a year later. King Digital could be even worse: It now seems like its performance peaked the year before it went public. The Empty Piñata There are plenty of problematic metrics in King Digital's second quarter report. Monthly unique users, daily active users and monthly unique payers all declined relative to this year's freshman quarter. However, the most glaring weakness is the fading popularity of the game that put King Digital on the map. King Digital released "Candy Crush Saga" a little over two years ago, and the game proved to be instantly addictive for smartphone owners and folks playing apps on Facebook. However, it's been all downhill, since gross bookings for the game peaked in the third quarter of last year. After ringing up $493 million in gross bookings during the holiday quarter, we've seen King Digital score just $429.5 milli

  • [By George Putnam]

Steve Halpern: Now, one of the positions that you've looked at is FelCor Lodging (FCH). Could you tell us a little about that?

George Putnam: Sure. Well, it grew fairly rapidly before the downturn in 2008 and didn't really have a great focus. With the new management team after 2008, they have sold off a lot of non-core properties and are focusing on more upscale properties and strong markets, and they've used the proceeds from asset sales to help the balance sheet. They have paid down a lot of high-priced debt, which also helps the bottom line.
