Global equity markets continued their ascent during the second quarter of 2013, with several major equity indices setting all-time highs during May. Momentum was then halted after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned that stimulus efforts would be tapered if the U.S. economy continued to strengthen. Clear signs of stress in the Chinese 铿ancial system and ongoing uncertainty over the implications of Japan's massive stimulus efforts added to investor fears. Equity markets corrected sharply before 铿ding solid footing during the 铿al days of June.
Despite this mid-quarter swoon, global equity markets, as measured by the MSCI World Index (C$) posted a 4.4% gain. The chart below illustrates the quarterly performance, expressed in Canadian dollars, of some notable equity indices from around the world:

During this past quarter the relative strength in U.S. markets continued to be apparent as the 6.5% gain in the S&P 500 Index (C$) signi铿antly outpaced the returns of most other regions.

Other governments in South America might not be as rapacious as Ecuador, but the impact of their policies has the same effect. Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX ) was brought up short in Chile after it was forced to halt development of its Pascua-Lama project after clashes with the government and indigenous tribes;Newmont Mining had its potentially lucrative Conga gold project stopped in Peru; andVale was forced to abandon its iron ore project in Argentina where Yamana Gold seems to have regular bouts of trouble.

It looks like Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX ) has been struck with gold fever.
The world's largest gold miner is trying to sell three of its Australian mines that produced some 452,000 ounces of gold last year and hadcombined reserves of almost 2.6 million ounces. With its debt burden of $11.6 billion a heavy one to carry, unloading some of its assets for a tidy sum could help alleviate the weight.

Barrick Gold (ABX), the largest gold producer in the world, recently reported quarterly results showing a decline in profits because of lower prices and reduced volumes. The company is, however staying with its production guidance of 7 million to 7.4 million oz. for the year. The company has also announced plans to identify and sell non-core assets which should provide shareholders with some cheer. All the gold producers now have to learn to live with lower gold prices of approximately $1,400 per ounce in the short term and there are pessimists who believe that prices could go as low as $1,300 per ounce. The strengthening of the dollar is also depressing earnings. At these prices, gold producers will have to show a dramatic reduction in costs and operational efficiency or reduce production by temporarily shutting down mines.

Corbis Providing landline connectivity is a fading business, with more and more folks saving money by disconnecting their home phone plans, relying primarily on smartphones. It's a grim trend that would make this a scary area for shareholders, but good luck trying to tell income-chasing investors to stay away. Despite their dubious growth prospects, Frontier Communications (FTR), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN) have been attracting investors based of the strength of their generous quarterly distributions. Frontier and Windstream -- and to a lesser extent CenturyLink -- have tried to go where the big boys won't. They concentrate on smaller markets where traditional phone services are still in demand, and they don't have to compete as hard with the titans of telco. It's an interesting strategy. It has long-term flaws, but the three stocks are still magnetic to investors that put up with the shortcomings in exchange for fat dividend checks every three months. Yield Signs How meaty are the disbursements here? CenturyLink yields 5.9 percent, and it's at the low end of the niche. Windstream is the most generous payer with a hefty 9.9 percent payout. Frontier straddles the two with its 7 percent yield. All three reported quarterly results this week, giving the market some valuable insight on the sustainability of their popular distributions. It's important to remember that these three companies aren't merely selling landlines. You don't stick around if you're only selling buggy whips, Beanie Babies and Milli Vanillii CDs. They also offer businesses a growing array of corporate communication services. For the most part, these efforts haven't been enough to grow the overall business. Frontier kicked off the three days of earnings reports on Tuesday, che
