Best Warren Buffett Companies To Invest In Right Now

Warren Buffett

On Monday, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B  ) (NYSE: BRK-A  ) CEO Warren Buffett just gave a total of 22,870,529 Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five different charitable foundations, worth nearly $2.63 billion dollars based on today's closing price of $114.88 per share.

Of course, this shouldn't come as a surprise, especially considering Buffett promised years ago he would gradually give away the bulk of his fortune to those five charities, beginning in July 2006 with 602,500 total shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock. Most notably, 500,000 of those shares would go to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Then, with each passing year, Buffett said he would decrease the number of shares by 5%.

What's changed
That said, if you're wondering why that "decreasing by 5%" math doesn't stack up with the number of shares Buffett just gave away this July, notea few things have changed since then.

The Company is a developer and seller of photovoltaic energy solutions. Through Solar Materials and Solar Energy (SunEdison), it is a developer of solar energy projects. The Company operates in two segments: semiconductor materials and solar energy. The Company Solar Energy segment includes the operations of its old Solar Materials segment, as well as its SunEdison business. In the Semiconductor Materials, the Company offers wafers with a variety of features. The Company wafers vary in size, surface features, composition, purity levels, crystal properties and electrical properties.

Semiconductor Materials

The Company monocrystalline wafers for use in semiconductor applications range in size from 100 millimeter to 300 millimeter and are round in shape for semiconductor customers because of the nature of their processing equipment. Its wafers are used as the starting material for the manufacture of various types of semiconductor devices, including microprocessor, memory, logic and power devices. In turn, these semiconductor devices are used in computers, cellular phones and other mobile electronic devices, automobiles and other consumer and industrial products. The Company prime wafer is a polished, pure wafer with an ultraflat and ultraclean surface. The Company epitaxial (epi), wafers consist of a thin silicon layer grown on the polished surface of the wafer. Typically, the epitaxial layer has different electrical properties from the underlying wafer. This provides customers with isolation between circuit elements than a polished wafer. Its AEGIS product is designed for certain specialized applications requiring high resis! tivity epitaxial wafers and its MDZ product feature. The AEGIS wafer includes a thin epitaxial layer grown on a standard starting wafer. The AEGIS wafer thin epitaxial layer eliminates harmful defects on the surface of the wafer, thereby allowing device manufacturers to increase yields. The Company supplies test/monitor wafers to its customers for use in testing semiconductor fabrication lines and processes. An SOI wafer is a different starting material for the chip making process.

Solar Energy

The Company Solar Energy segment provides solar energy services that integrate the design, installation, financing, monitoring, operations and maintenance portions of the downstream solar market to provide a solar energy service to its customers. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) reported earnings yesterday that showed the e-commerce giant is just barely eking out a living, with an operating profit margin of 0.5% (and a negative net). And now, Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK  ) has announced a plan that might squeeze Amazon's profit margin even further.

Yesterday, small cap online discount retailer Overstock.com, Inc (NASDAQ: OSTK) went onsale by 22.28% after announcing a disappointing earnings report which seemed to lack much management commentary, meaning it might be time to see whether its worth buying the stock given the new discount plus take a look at its performance verses that of other discount retailers like small cap Big Lots, Inc (NYSE: BIG), large cap Ross Stores, Inc (NASDAQ: ROST) and the big kahuna of online retail, Amazon.com, Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN).

It's been a great months for investors in e-commerce store Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK  ) , as the stock has rocketed up more than 330%. The momentum didn't stop in last week's earnings release, either, as sales climbed double digits and earnings were up a ridiculous 687%. For six consecutive quarters, the company has increased revenue growth, fueling the bullish speculation behind the stock. With the major turnaround behind it, and other signs of stabilization, the question is whether Overstock still offers growth-hungry investors an attractive investment. Let's take a look at recent earnings and guidance for clues.

April 25 was a bad day to own shares of Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) . Despite revenue that exceeded forecasts and earnings that fell in line with what analysts anticipated, shares of the e-tailer plummeted 10% to close at $303.83 on a mixed outlook. Since then, shares have inched up less than 1%. Now, with the company's shares trading at a 26% discount to their 52-week high, should the Foolish investor consider buying the business, or would rivals likeeBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) or Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK  ) serve as more appealing prospects?

Innovation: Innovation is a major priority at AT&T. And so far, it looks like the company is making savvy moves, particularly with its push into the cloud. To this end, AT&T has rolled out NetBond, which involves alliances with top providers like IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT), CSC (CSC) and Equinix (EQIX). But perhaps the most interesting growth initiative is Digital Life, which allows customers to use their smartphones as remote control devices with homes and cars. All in all, the opportunity could be huge, adding another nice revenue stream — AT&T already has agreements with companies like GM (GM), Ford (F), Nissan, Audi, BMW and Tesla (TSLA)

Equinix Inc. (NASDAQ: EQIX) is expected to be one of the companies in the space looking to employ a merger or acquisition strategy in the near future. The company announced last Friday that it has opened its second International Business Exchange (:IBX) in Rio de Janeiro, based on the platform provided by ALOG Data Centers of Brazil. This new Rio de Janeiro data center, popularly known as RJ2, will enable Equinix to meet the growing demand for data center services in the region. The consensus price target for this top stock is $230.50. Equinix closed Thursday down almost 4% at $166.61.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Equinix, Inc. (EQIX) is a leading Internet exchange service provider, serving communications, content and enterprise customers in state-of-the-art data centers. Equinix also offers interconnection services to customers seeking to connect directly with other Equinix customers. We believe that this "tethering" of customers in a network neutral environment creates important competitive barriers that distinguish Equinix from other data center business models. Last year, management indicated its intention to convert the company to a REIT. Shares were pressured this quarter, as the market grew concerned about the company's ability to make this REIT conversion. In addition, REIT shares themselves were under pressure on concerns that rising interest rates would depress their relative valuations in the stock market. We believe that Equinix remains an attractive investment, whether or not a REIT conversion eventually occurs.

Using Equinix (EQIX) and Rackspace Hosting (RAX) as comparables, I was pumped up. CONE was projecting $135 million in EBITDA for 2013 (at the midpoint of guidance). On a $445 million market capitalization with $277.7 million in net debt, it traded at an EV/EBITDA of just 5.4 times. Compare that to EQIX at 13 times or RAX at 15 times. This was a bargain and growing revenues at a 18% clip year-on-year, too, above EQIX's 10% or RAX's 15%.

The U.S. economy grew, sort of, at a miniscule annual rate of 0.1 percent in the first quarter, according to the Commerce Dept. This preliminary reading, the first of three, was far below pessimistic expectations. This underperformance has occurred several times since the on-again, off-again recovery officially began in June 2009.

No wonder U.S. government bond yields have declined this year, contrary to most expectations, with the 10-year Treasury going from 3 percent to as low as 2.6 percent.

The first quarter’s economic weakness was attributed primarily to a 7.6 percent decline in exports, partly because of economic weakness in Europe and Asia. Poor weather, a favorite excuse for everything that went wrong during the winter, probably played a part in the export slump.

Also noteworthy, however: Business spending on equipment fell at a 5.5 percent annual pace in the first three months of the year, the largest decline since 2009.

Regardless of the causes, the tepid (to be generous) GDP reading marks a continuation of the still-sluggish growth in the current five-year economic expansion.

The report came right before the Federal Reserve announced that it is continuing to reduce, or taper, its bond purchases to $45 billion a month, from the original $85 billion. The Fed says it’s starting to see faster growth after the harsh winter.

The Fed also maintained its guidance on short-term interest rates, saying they would remain near zero for a “considerable time” after the bond-buying program ends later this year. The current expectation is that the Fed won’t start to raise interest rates until well into 2015.

However, evidence of a possible economic rebound came the next day, May 2. The federal government jobs report for April showed a jump of 288,000, with a sharp decline in the official unemployment rate to 6.3 percent.

Meanwhile, corporate profits continue to grow, albeit modest
